Understanding Package Defaults in the Emirates Courier Express App

When using the Emirates Courier Express App in Shopify, your orders are can be automatically assigned to packages based on the default setting merchants choose. Note that these apply only from an Emirates Courier Express App booking perspective and quoting is always conducted using the exact product dimensions and weights.

Below is a breakdown of the three available package modes from which you can set one as the default.

Custom Packaging

If no packages are defined, custom packaging is treated as the starting point. The weights and dimensions of the products in the order are used or if no dimensions are listed, 5x5x5cm is used. Weight is mandatory and if not defined, no quotes will be visible. This order below is using those dimensions and takes the weight from the order.

The Emirates Courier Express App automatically assigns extra packages once the order’s weight or size exceeds the limit of the first package.

For Example:

  • A customer orders 36kg of products (12 products in total, 3kg each).
  • The Emirates Courier Express App assigns two packages: One 30 KG Parcel plus a 6 KG Parcel

Defined Package (No Weight Specified)

Here, the package is defined but no weight is attached. Instead, the packaging is auto selected from the packaging (Box) size you add to your packages in the Emirates Courier Express App but the weight setting comes from the order total weight. Extra packages are not automatically assigned once the weight limit is exceeded

Example:

  • A customer orders 22kg of products.
  • You have created a custom box with the size of Length, Width, Height, Weight: 0 (not set) and selected this as default.

The order will be set to whatever box dimensions are defined. And the weight will come from the total order items.

Learn how to create Defined Packages

Defined Package (Weight Set)

This setting applies stricter control. Only the first package is automatically assigned, and the order weight is ignored. Merchants then decide whether to add more packages.

Key points:

  • The system will not auto-split orders into multiple packages.
  • You can add additional packages of the same or different types manually.
  • This option is ideal if you prefer to manage packaging decisions case by case.

Example:

  • The product in the order is 4 x cartons of drink at 7.3kg each.
  • The Emirates Courier Express App has assigned one box as you have a default package of 8kg.
  • You would add 3 more parcels of the default weight and size to enable all items to be sent.

Recap of the options:

  1. Custom Packaging is Default - Order weight and dimensions used. Extra Packages will be assigned once the weight or size limit has been reached.
  2. Defined Package (no weight specified) is Default - The defined package dimensions will be used alongside the order's total weight, and extra packages not automatically assigned once the weight limit is exceeded
  3. Defined Package (Weight set) is Default -  Only the first package will be assigned, order weight ignored and the merchant can decide whether to add more packages of the same or different type as needed.
